I wrote a previous article about how to Speed up your computer without any third party tool. Disk Defragmentation is one of the effective way to speed up the file and program load time.
Whenever you fill your hard drive with files or new programs the operating system tries to place them in the vacant places. Operating system breaks the files into chunks or fragments and store them discretely across the total hard disk memory. So the computer takes time to assemble them and consequently the performance time is prolonged.
Tip: Useful Tricks to Defragment Your System Drives in Windows.
This does happen not only in the hard disk but also in the removable disks like USB hard disk, USB flash drive. So Defragmentation arranges all the chunks or fragments and thus it reduce the time to load any file or program.
In almost every version of windows there is included a defragmenter utility. But some of the draw back of the utility is it defragments the entire drive at a time and it ignores the files smaller than 64 MB.
But Microsoft offers another free utility called Contig that lets you to perform the defragmentation with more control. The specialty of “Contig” is it lets you to perform the defragmentation of the individual files, folder or the entire disk drive. But as Contig runs in the command prompt you can also try the Power Defragmenter. Power Defragmenter is as like as the visual edition of “Contig”. It use “Contig” internally and lets you to chose the files in visual interface. Contig is compatible with XP, Vista, Windows 7.

How to Use the Defragment utility
As the use of Contig is bit technical so you can perform the Power Defragmenter. Which is user friendly and easy to use.
The termination of the program while running won’t cause the disk damage or corruption as Contig uses the Windows internal defragmentation APIs.
N.B-
Defragmentation is only recommended for the traditional hard drives. Though the defragmentation may occur in the flash drives, it does not impact the performance. Defragmentation may cause the corruption of flash drives(solid-state drives) where it cannot cause the harm in the traditional hard drive.
