Tanmay Windows Leave a Comment

It becomes tedious for an individual to keep himself stranded in front of the computer waiting for it to complete its job and then turn it off. Hence it will be highly beneficial if there is some tool that can turn off the computer on its own after realizing that the ongoing job has been finished.
Keeping in touch about the problem we enrich your knowledge about such an application which cannot only turn off but also can restart, hibernate, stand by, log off and put your computer into whatever state you desire. The application that aids this task is Shutdown Timer. It is capable of working in different modes i,e it works when some set of conditions are fulfilled. The set of conditions may range from time countdowns, processor activity, memory activities or network activities.

The Main Concept about Shutdown Timer :

Inspite of its name, this application can perform several other duties as mentioned previously. To know about the basic concepts the first step is to download and install Shutdown Timer in your computer. You can download the application from the above link. The installation of the application software is not a big deal as it is installed in ordinary fashion.
After successfully installing the software, run the application. It should look like the one below. In the top right corner of the window you can find the different states that you can put your computer into. Select the state of your desire and when the required conditions will be fulfilled, the computer will automatically move into that state. While using this application, please keep in mind that this application will ignore all programs that may be running at the instant when the required conditions are fulfilled and hence in the process you may lose some unsaved data.

How to Setup and use Shutdown Timer?

There are various sets of conditions available with this application and you may choose the one which suits you the best. We will discuss each set in detail now :
1. Based on Date and Time :
The basic condition is of course related to countdown of a time duration set by you i,e you have to enter the time duration after which you want your computer to navigate to the selected state. To perform the operation under this set of condition first mark the “Activate” checkbox and then you will be capable of entering the time limit after which you want Shutdown Timer to take the desired action. After checking whether everything entered is correct or not click on the large “Activate” button on the lower left and you will see a message “Working” in the same place along with the countdown of the clock.
You can also perform the operation by changing the date if you want Shutdown Timer to be scheduled for a future date. The procedure to be followed is exactly the same as the one with time settings.

2. Based on CPU Usage and Temperature : The second set of condition that may be useful to you is regarding the CPU usage and the temperature of the processor. Similar to first condition you have to first mark the “Activate” checkbox and then set the threshold percentage for CPU usage i,e if the CPU usage goes beyond that specified percentage for a desired time interval the Shutdown Timer will take the desired action.
Just as above, you can also activate the application if the temperature of your processor goes beyond a specific value for a definite interval of time.

3. Based on Available Memory : This is another set of condition that adds on to the list of options that you can enjoy. In this case you can make your computer navigate to your desired selected state if the memory usage goes beyond or below a specified value for a certain interval of time. The procedure related to its operation is just the same as described in the earlier set of conditions.

4. Based on Network Activity : In this category, you have the option of selecting the network adapter which will be monitored and the instant network activity reaches a specified point the Shutdown Timer starts its action and takes your computer into your desired selected state. This condition is most useful in cases where you are forced  to keep your computer running owing to some ongoing downloads. Here you can specify that if the download speed reduces to a certain value for a certain interval of time then the machine goes into the desired state.

The variety of conditions that can be used also serves for good protection of the machine as you can set your machine to be turned off if CPU usage exceeds a certain percentage. On the whole this application is of great use for both protection of your computer as well as for saving power.

  3. George :

I like the principal behind it. As a side note, many computers have an integrated BIOS feature which lets your computer boot up at a certain time automatically. If you also temper with that, then you will have your computer turning on and off completely automatically.
