The common problem you may come across while surfing Facebook at school or workplaces is that the admins block it from entire the network. It is somehow frustrating if you’re fully out of reach from your friends, family or colleagues because you can’t open Facebook when it is blocked by server or due to a blocking firewall from the network administrator of the organization.
Not in the simple way but using some technical tricks you can bypass or cheat the firewall and get on Facebook When it’s blocked. Due to availability of several tutorials to access blocked Facebook, the admins try to include different types of blocking system.
Before we get into the possible ways of breaking the firewall to open Facebook, you must go through some common workarounds with your system.
1. Try Google Public DNS or Google Open DNS servers
You can switch to either Google Public DNS server or Google Open DNS server to check whether you can access Facebook whether it is blocked due to the DNS server. Though I am not too much hopeful with this DNS tricks, you can give it a try. I have experienced many instances when switching the DNS server worked like a charm while accessing blocked websites.
The Windows 7 users can change the DNS server from Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center. Under the Network and Sharing Center, click ‘Change adapter settings’ at the left side and right-click on the current network adapter. Choose ‘Properties’, head to the ‘Network’ tab, select ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’ and click on the ‘Properties’ button and select the option ‘Use the following DNS server address’.
Put the followings one-by-one and check if you can open blocked Facebook:
Google Public DNS server address:
Preferred DNS server 22.214.171.124 Alternate DNS server 126.96.36.199
OpenDNS server address:
Preferred DNS server 188.8.131.52 Alternate DNS server 184.108.40.206
Double check your System’s Hosts file
The hosts file of you system would be the first thing that you should check if you want to get access to Facebook when it is bl0cked at school. Anyone can easily use the system hosts file to block any website without having any knowledge on networking.
If you are using Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8) as your system, you can find the hosts file under C > Windows > System32 > Drivers > Etc . Open the file with any text editor (Notepad, Wordpad etc.). The file should look like this:
If Facebook is listed there, delete all the lines containing the word ‘facebook’ and save the file.
If you are a MAC OSX user, navigate to Applications > Utility > Terminal and then write down the following command into the terminal window:
$ sudo nano /etc/hosts
The Hosts file opens and it should look like this:
If you find any suspicious line containing ‘facebook’, delete that immediately and save the file by pressing [Command] + [O].
After editing your system hosts file, restart the system and try to browse Facebook.com. You should get into the Facebook login page.
Check for any unwanted/suspicious process at system task manager
If neither the Google DNS servers nor the system’s host file trick do work for you, open the system task manager for a while and look into the running process. If you find any suspicious program which does not claim any relationship with the system programs or the applications you use, select the process and terminate it. Sometime, Facebook denies the access if your system is affected with any malware.
Use the IP address of Facebook instead of the domain name
Earlier, I said that your network admin may block Facebook from the system host file. In such a case editing the host file could solve the problem. But in most cases the computer users of any organization do not have the privilege of editing the system files. In this situation, put the IP address directly at your browser address bar. Using the IP address instead of Domain name will bypass the system host file. Here is how to get the Facebook IP address.
Press [Win key] + [R] and type “ping facebook.com -t” (without the quotes). The ping result should appear into a command prompt along with the IP address.
Sometime, the command prompt gets also blocked by the administrator. In such a situation try this site to find the Facebook IP address.
Linux and MAC OSX system:
Open the terminal at your system and type “ping facebook.com” (without the quotes) and hit enter.
How to Open Facebook When it is Blocked through Network firewall
While all of the above checklist fail to open Facebook if blocked, it is mostly possible that the website is blocked through the network firewall. That means that you’ll have to cheat the network firewall. Here is some quick tips.
Use URL shortener to mask the Facebook address
Sometime masking the original address of a website can bypass the filtering system. Though I am not so hopeful, but you can give it a try. If you’re lucky, you can get out of the ban. goo.gl or bit.ly are some famous URL shortener services.
Go for the mobile version of Facebook
Facebook has different version for the mobile browsers. It is light-weight and fast loading than the full desktop version of Facebook. The mobile version of Facebook has a different address than the full version.
Some time the admins can forget to include the mobile version address into the banning list. So if you are lucky, you can browse the Facebook mobile version, read the news feeds, like the status updates, put a reply of any status, read and reply the messages etc.
You can browse the mobile version of Facebook through Opera mini browser. Opera mini browser is a mobile based browser. But there is a demo version of Opera to check any website’s mobile version right from the desktop.
You can also put https://m.facebook.com/ at your regular browser to browse the mobile version of Facebook.
Access Facebook though Proxy servers when blocked by the network administrator
Using secured web proxy can be a good choice to access Facebook if it’s blocked by the admin. The proxy servers allow you to access any blocked websites including Facebook as well. Not all the proxy servers would work for you to access blocked Facebook as they are not optimized properly to get into that site. A bunch of proxy sites out there to unblock Facebook. But what I found best to get on Facebook when its blocked at school, college or office is Securitales.
Securitales allows you to access any website including Facebook, Twitter etc. securely from anywhere in the world. Using this web proxy you can access Facebook from China or open Twitter from Iran. The best part of this proxy website is that it never ask to install any software or add-on. As it uses HTTPS (secured) protocol, you can rest assured that all your browsing data are safe. But, this service is not totally free of cost. It is available free for only 10 minutes. Therefore, if you are not too much pessimistic about using a paid service, you can give Securitales a try to Get into Facebook if banned by the ISP or filtered by the network administrator.
However, if you are not going to spend money, you can try the following free proxy websites to access blocked Facebook.
But there are some drawbacks with proxy web servers. If your network administrators trace your activities and get to know that you are browsing Facebook through the proxy servers, they will block that proxy sites as well as other proxy sites. Apart from that, accessing the log-in page through a third-party website can be dangerous some time.
Though there is a way to create your own proxy server so that you can take care of your log-in credentials and browsing data. But it needs your personal web server. If you do not have such a personal server, you may create your own proxy server for free using Google app engine.
Read this tutorial and learn how to use Facebook when it is blocked by server using your own proxy site.
Using a personal proxy server has several advantages. You won’t have to go for any monthly payment system or create any account with the service. As your proxy server has its own unique address, chances are less of getting caught by the network administrators.
Stay updated with your Facebook profile through email account
If you still cannot get on Facebook at school, college or office when its blocked, it is better that you can at least know what is happening with your Facebook friends, what they are saying or whether you have any message from your family etc. Go to your Facebook account and set your Facebook account to receive the notification at your email account.
You can do it from Account > Account Settings after logging into your account. Mange the notification preference from the Notification tab. Once done, every update of your Facebook account will be sent at the email address. Now open Facebook in office and get to know what is happening with your Facebook friends as well as your family.
