Yu, the sub-brand of Micromax has gathered a lot of attention and success with its devices like Yureka and Yuphoria. The company has launched 4 phone within an year and one of them is the recently launched Micromax Yu Yunique, the device is priced at Rs. 4,999 and is going to feed the needs of people who want a smartphone under 5k. But does this device really worth it? Find that out as we review the device!
Micromax Yu Yunique Review
Build Review
Upon comparing this device with all its competitors I find this phone has the most premium quality material used. No nick-knack noises like the Redmi 2 from Xiaomi neither the device has low plastic feel in its power and volume rockers. Proper placement of 3.5mm jack slot and charging port are an added advantage. Device feels really good in hand and is light compared to any other device in this segment. Rubberized coating at the back makes this device even better and helps to prevent the device from slipping. The bad thing about the rubberized back is it tends to catch a lot of smudges. Other build factors like led notification light and 4.7 inch display is on the front with no hard buttons.
Display Review
Yu Yunique has a reduced display of 4.7 inch as compared to its predecessor’s 5 Inch Display. Nothing apart from the screen size has changed. Screen displays clear images and color representation is also good, but when it comes to tilted angles, the screen doesn’t last for a long time. Display quality is impressive when it comes to sharpness, readability and contrast. There were issues sometimes with touch sensitivity but still it is a good display.
Software Review
Well, as we all know that predecessor YU Yuphoria had a Cyanogen OS installed and the craze of cyanogen is overwhelming due to its open custom ability. This time company has decided to go with something different which has a stock android lollipop feel. YU has kept the option open for Cyanogen lovers. You can flash the Cyanogen by downloading it from the company portal or walk up to a service center they will help doing to the same. There was almost no bloatware in the device and Yunique gave near-stock experience. The phone was fast and didn’t lag much.
Micromax Yu Yunique Review: Hardware
I am really impressed with the hardware configuration. YU Yunique is powered by a Qualcomm 410 processor. RAM and internal memory has been reduced to 1GB and 8GB respectively. With all the basic software and all primary updates, about 4GB is left as usable space. To test the limits, I tried some basic games which do not demand much resource and found the performance and multi-tasking abilities to be good but when I moved towards slightly heavy and resource demanding games, the device was not that good.
Camera Review
YU Yunique packs an 8MP primary and a 2 MP front facing camera. First of all the image quality were not sharp at all, they looked washed out and the colors were bland. Comparing it with the Redmi’s camera was a slip, Redmi successfully produces the best images in comparison with all other devices in this segment but we shouldn’t forget that it is a higher priced device. In all, the camera is average performer and is suitable for casual shots around but still it will fail to impress.
Micromax Yu Yunique Review: Verdict
Yu Yunique does an average job in all the fields. The camera was little bit depressing but when we look at the price tag, that performance looks good. The hardware performance is excellent and manages to run almost everything properly but don’t expect the performance to be like that of a 10k device. Yu Yunique’s 4G capability and the HD display does help it to get a better score than others but still if you are looking for a phone around 5k then it would be better to add 2k more and get something else.
