Understanding a problem and fixing it is what Google does best. Over the years, there has been a huge gap when it comes to the number of men and the number of women that are working in the tech or IT industry. Google has launched an innovative new campaign called ‘Made with code’ that aims at getting more women interested in coding and other technical aspects about programming. The initiative is clearly pushed to make women understand that the things they love – applications on their phones, movies, and tools are all made by code and that they too can apply skills to pursue their passion.
With an investment of $50 million from Google to push the project over the next three years, there is bound to be a lot of buzz around it. At present, the ‘Made in code’ program has a host of partners that are present to help the initiative. Some of the partners tied up are:
- Chelsea Clinton
- Mincy Kaling
- MIT Media Lab
- Girl Scouts of the USA
- Girls Inc.
- Girls who code
- The National center for women & Information technology
As part of the initiative, the ‘Made With Code’ website will give resources and projects for young developers and coders to discuss different lessons and projects with each other and also pursue the next level of their skill with mentors. The initiative also pushes kids who have no prior experience in coding to learn more about it and develop an interest.
While planning out the initiative, lack of encouragement was seen as one of the reasons for the decline. Experts rightly point out that there is a genuine lack of information going out to those who are interested in such innovative fields. Many industry experts point to the fact that there aren’t many industry heroes to lead as an example for all the young enthusiasts out there. With such an initiative, there will be a strong force to turn the gender gap around. Most young women would be encouraged to learn about coding and how they can explore different avenues in coding.
With ‘Made with code’, there would be simple coding projects that would generate interest and garner participation – like designing a 3D printed bracelet, or to create animated GIFs or even making music for that matter. Also the collaborations they have would also be a stepping stone to getting young women to get their first coding experience. In almost every instance, the coding and development industry have been reflected as a male dominated industry. An initiative like this is bound to bring women to the driving seat of technology in the near future, a definite must in the industry.
