How to Create Visual Heatmap of Windows Directories

These days 1TB hard drive is not considered as a high storage volume. It will be filled up within few months, and you will run through an exacerbated time when you have to store significant number files, but you do not have any more space. If you do not want to drain out your valuable hard disk space, you have to do something. Therefore, you can use a third party software that will aid you to create a visual heatmap of Windows directories so that you can detect the file that is laying out most of the memory.
WinDirStat is one of the best aesthetic heatmap creators out there for Windows. WinDirStat is a free software that is compatible with Windows 95 to Windows 8.1. Every single file will be scanned by thing software in order to create the heatmap.

How to Create a Visual Heatmap with WinDirStat

WinDirStat is a free program and it doesn’t consist with a huge amount of features. However, the minimum feature list will help you to get things done. At first, download WinDirStat and install the program. After opening the tool on your PC, you can find a very small window.

Right on that window, you can select your partition that you want to scan. This is possible to scan your entire hard disk at one or a single partition at a time. I would recommend you to scan one partition at a time to get a better visualization. The scan result shows three things or the scan result window is divided into three parts.

First section will let you pick out a file and its size from a tree view. You can point out a specific file and check all the things of that file.

You will also get the file size on your screen.
The second section of WinDirStat will let you check the extension that is eating most space. This software supports all extensions. That simply means, you will surely get from .text or.ttf on your screen.

The third section of this software is connected with the second part. This section has a visual heatmap/chart that shows the consumed memory. You can select any file type on the second section and the memory will be highlighted in the third section.
These aforementioned features are the core part of this visual heatmap creator. However, it has some other features as well. For example, if you want to delete the largest file or any particular file, just point that out and right click on it on the first section. You will get the option to delete/permanently delete.
