Virtual Desktop has grown to be very much familiar to Linux and Mac OS users. It is actually a group of desktop windows that facilitates you to keep yourself simultaneously in multiple work-spaces virtually staying in the same operating system and using the same system resources. If your Windows desktop is cluttered with many application windows, then you can create Virtual Desktop in Windows 7, even in Windows XP and Vista. It may help you to use various applications in a more advanced and simple way.
You can easily change the windows from one desktop to another for different functionality. Every application of different desktops have the different session id. So an application running on a desktop is not available on another desktop. This phenomenon obviously help you to play uniquely with the applications being executed on different desktops. Here is how to integrate Virtual Desktop in Windows 7 computers. (You might also like to read: How to Create Virtual Drive for Any Folder)
Preparing Virtual Desktop for Windows 7 Computer
1. Dexpot is a software that allows you to create virtual desktops in Windows operating system. Download Dexpot from here and install it in your computer. After completing the installation, you can see the different desktops in one window by double-clicking on the icon from the system tray.
By default the number of virtual desktop is 4. Though you can increase the number according to your need.
Right-click on the system tray icon and select ‘Settings’. In the ‘Settings’ window, you can choose your preferred number of desktops from the ‘General’ menu at the left side. This application allows to create up to 20 virtual desktops.
You can also set various options to customize the virtual desktops.. This application provides a wider region of interaction as it has the option to choose several languages like English, Italian, Spanish, French etc. The languages can be changed from the ‘Settings’ option.
2. Another useful software to create virtual desktop is ‘Desktops’. All you need to do to is to download Desktops fr0m here and extract it. Run the executive file. At the starting of the application, you’ll get an option to choose the hotkey.
Select the hotkey and click on ‘OK’. You can switch between the virtual desktops using the hotkey. If you want to change the hotkey in future, just right-click on the icon in the system tray and select ‘Options’. From the ‘Option’ dialog windows, you can change the hotkey as you prefer.
This application is lightweight and it does occupy a negligible amount of memory. For this reason it does not slow down your computer. The only down side of this application is that the maximum number of Virtual desktop is only 4 where that for the previous one was 20. In spite of that, I’d recommend to use the later one as it is manufactured by Microsoft. Both of the applications run in Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. (Tip: Turn Your Existing Computer Into Virtual Machine.)
