Having said that there is nothing that you cannot find at Wikipedia! It is a great web resource for information – you can get information about almost everything! If you want to keep a backup of the information from Wikipedia you could do it by copying the text and saving them as text files. But, it is not very productive way. Rather, you can backup the Wikipedia document by creating a eBook from the Wikipedia article and download it to your local computer.
Creating eBook from Wikipedia Articles
Wikipedia has its own inbuilt mechanism to convert any article into eBook for the registered users to do so. Here is how to do it.
1. Log into Wikipedia with your existing account or create a new account.
2. Once you are logged in, expand the ‘Print/Export’ option from the left sidebar panel and click the ‘Create a book’ link.
3. Click the ‘Start book creator’ button and activate the feature with your Wikipedia account.
4. Once you activate the feature, the following options are enabled for every page in Wikipedia: Add this page to your book, Show book, Suggest pages.
Add this page to your book: Whenever you land to any Wikipedia page, this option allows to add that page to the eBook. Just click the ‘Add this page to your book’ button and add the page directly to your eBook.
Show book: The ‘Show book’ option lets you to see the pages that you added to your book. Once you click this link, you can see the pages which you added to your book. Here you can manage the eBook like giving a title and subtitle for the ebook or setting the paper size, creating a content page and many more.
However, if you made any mistake to choose the page for the book, you can click the ‘Clear book’ link. After setting up the book, you can download the PDF version. Click the ‘Download’ button under the ‘Show book’ page.
This will render all the pages with cover page as well as the table of content page (if you select this option) automatically and start generating the download link for you. Wait for some time depending on the size of the content. Once completed, click the document file ink to download and save the Wikipedia pages as a eBook.
You can also order a printed version of your book using PediaPress. PediaPress allows to customize the design with preview. Once done, you can place the order to take the delivery at your home address.
Wikipedia handles the process pretty accurately. It ease the whole process of creating and generating the eBook with content page. It automatically adjusts the font size, page margins etc. and you don’t need to think about them.
Suggest pages: This is an interesting feature in Wikipedia. If you click on this link, all the relevant page according to your search will be automatically added to your eBook.
Verdict:
Generally, people use the popular search engines to get information. The search engines collect the information from the web and serve according to relevancy. For many search terms, Google and other large search engines prefer Wikipedia. For instance, if you search for the term ‘america’ in Google, you will find all of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position are occupied by the Wikipedia.
Nice article! But I can say that you have written the spelling of “Wikipedia” wrong in the title! Please check that!
Thank you Sohil. We’re sorry for such silly mistake!
