2. The “Run” box opens up. Type in “regedit” to open the Registry Editor. Confirm opening if asked for.
3. The Registry Editor appears. Click on the “File” tab in the menu bar and select to “Export”.
4. A backup of your registry is created immediately. Choose any location on your computer to save this backup file naming it “backup”. Make sure to save the file as “Registration Files (*.reg)” and to check the box next to “Export All”.
5. Exit Registry Editor. You have successfully created a backup of your existing Registry as the file “backup.reg”.
How to Restore Windows Registry from the Backup Point
Now, to restore Registry if it crumbles due to any misguided action taken on it, use the backup file created. Here’s how :
1. Click “Start” and select “Run” or simply press “Windows key+R”.
2. The “Run” box opens up. Type in “regedit” to open the Registry Editor. Confirm opening if asked for.
3. The Registry Editor appears. Click on the “File” tab in the menu bar and select to “Import”.
4. You are now asked to choose a file from where the registry settings will be imported or restored. Choose the location where you have saved the backup file. Then press “Enter” to complete the restoring process.
Your Registry have been successfully restored from a backup file of the registry.
Backing up registry should be done when the settings are such that your operating system functions in a proper manner. Once you have created such a backup, the risk factor diminishes effectively when you have to edit registry settings.
