Create Backup and Restore Windows Registry From Backup Point

The Windows Registry is a very sophisticated and delicate part of the Windows operating system. The registry settings determine the process in which the operating system carries out its different tasks. Any misguided action taken on the registry pose a potential threat of crippling the core of the operating system, since it forms a sincerely key and effective role in its process control design.
Many tricks and tweaks for increasing various aspects of easing user control over Windows involve actions on the Registry that are not authenticated and may be harmful to your operating system.

Why Create a Backup of your Registry ?

It’s recommended that you create a backup of your Registry each time you try an action on its settings. This gives you the liberty of changing any settings without undergoing  the risk of disrupting your Windows operating system. You always have an option to restore your Registry from the backup you have created before performing any change.
We’ll, here, at TechTipsApp.Com show you how to create a backup of your existing Windows registry and using this backup point to restore the registry. The procedure is applicable in both Windows 7 and Windows XP.

How to Backup Windows Registry

Follow the steps below to create a backup of your existing registry :
1. Click “Start” and select “Run” or simply press “Windows key+R”.

2. The “Run” box opens up. Type in “regedit” to open the Registry Editor. Confirm opening if asked for.

3. The Registry Editor appears. Click on the “File” tab in the menu bar and select to “Export”.

4. A backup of your registry is created immediately. Choose any location on your computer to save this backup file naming it “backup”. Make sure to save the file as “Registration Files (*.reg)” and to check the box next to “Export All”.save-registry-backup

5. Exit Registry Editor. You have successfully created a backup of your existing Registry as the file “backup.reg”.

How to Restore Windows Registry from the Backup Point

Now, to restore Registry if it crumbles due to any misguided action taken on it, use the backup file created. Here’s how :
1. Click “Start” and select “Run” or simply press “Windows key+R”.
2. The “Run” box opens up. Type in “regedit” to open the Registry Editor. Confirm opening if asked for.
3. The Registry Editor appears. Click on the “File” tab in the menu bar and select to “Import”.

4. You are now asked to choose a file from where the registry settings will be imported or restored. Choose the location where you have saved the backup file. Then press “Enter” to complete the restoring process.
Your Registry have been successfully restored from a backup file of the registry.
Backing up registry should be done when the settings are such that your operating system functions in a proper manner. Once you have created such a backup, the risk factor diminishes effectively when you have to edit registry settings. You are now free to work upon the Registry without having to think of its stability.
