The budget phone segment in India is currently hot. There are tons of phones entering in this segment, but only few stand out of the crowd. Coolpad had previously made some noise when it launched the Dazen 1 and the Dazen X7 in the market. But after that, the company was no where to be seen, Companies like Lenovo, Asus and Xiaomi were almost ruling the budget segment and that is when Coolpad disrupted all of that. The company left the Dazen name and stepped in the Indian market once again with their new device. The latest entrant from Coolpad called Coolpad Note 3 has totally ended the competition in this segment. With features such as 3GB RAM and a fingerprint sensor, this smartphone touts the best specifications under the 10K price.
Although it is not important that big numbers always give good performance. And that’s the reason why we are reviewing Coolpad Note 3 today!
Coolpad Note 3 Complete Review
Design
Coolpad came up with a pretty smooth design for Note 3. The device comes with a 5.5 inch display on the front which takes most of the space. The capacitive touch buttons sit right below the display and may loosen the grip if one is trying to reach them while using the device with a single hand. Since the device is so big, on-screen touch buttons would have been way nicer than the capacitive buttons. There is a metallic rim which goes around the front of the display and adds an elegant look to the device. On the back, the device comes with a soft matte finish and that feels really smooth in the hand. The back panel doesn’t attracts much smudges or fingerprints on the back. The back side houses the camera along with the fingerprint sensor and the speakers.
Volume buttons are placed on the left of the device while the power button is on the right. Coolpad Note 3 is pretty thick as it measures approximately 10mm but is fairly light and easy to use in hand, it may feel a bit bulky in the starting but the user will get used to it.
Display
Coolpad note 3 comes with a 5.5 inch display with a 720 * 1280 resolution which translates to a pixel density of 320ppi. It is a TFT IPS display and doesn’t fails to impress. The only complaint with the display that I have is the brightness, the display is not bright enough and as a result you can’t look at it properly in harsh sunlight. The color temperatures are almost perfect but it looked on a cooler side to me at first. 720p resolution on a 5.5-inch display doesn’t sounds much tempting but still it is a good deal for just Rs. 8,999.
Camera
This is where the device failed to impress me. The device has got a 13MP camera on the back and is aided with a flash for dark environment. The camera on the Coolpad Note 3 doesn’t performs as good as one would like it to be. The images lack sharpness and details. If you zoom-in the images then they look as if they have been filled with water-colors. The case is somewhat better with the front camera. Even the front camera performs just like the rear camera but it is a bit good.
Performance
With 3GB of RAM in a device, everyone wants high performance and Coolpad note 3 totally excels in this place. The device performs flawlessly. Whetherit be multi-tasking or playing heavy games, the device does everything pretty easily. Most of the app data is stored on the RAM which enables multitasking a lot easier. When it came to hardcore gaming, the device did an exceptional job and ran almost all the heavy games except a few. Games like Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5 did run on the device but with a difficulty.
Fingerprint Scanner
This is probably the cheapest device in the Indian market as of now which comes with a fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scanner on this device is really accurate and works perfectly 99% of the times. You can store up to 5 fingers. You can even use the fingerprints to use different applications, for example you can assign one finger to unlock the device and use the rest four fingers to open four different applications. The fingerprint scanner on this device is actually a lot better than some of the high end phones.
Verdict
This is the best phone under Rs. 9,000 according to me. The phone has got an excellent battery, great display, awesome performance and good looks. The only place where the device is not excellent is the camera. If you are someone who wants raw performance than you should definitely try out this device. Also, the fingerprint scanner works as an icing on the cake! So if you are not much concerned about the camera then definitely go for this device.
