Change Default Operating System in Windows Boot Menu

Tanmay Windows Leave a Comment

Many users like to use more than one Operating Systems ( Windows 7, Vista, XP) in his/her Computer. Primarily an operating system is set as default in your Computer. When you switch on your Computer, that default operating system starts automatically.
Suppose you have three operating systems – Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP and generally Windows 7 is set as a default operating system. Now if you want to run the operating system other than Windows 7 like Windows XP or Vista  then every time you boot on your computer, you have to choose that specific operating system.
Tip: Install Windows XP from USB.
Here I’ve explained the procedure to change default operating system as your choice so that it automatically runs when boot your computer (also read Move Default Location of My Documents in Windows XP). Note that the changes must be done from Windows 7 or Vista, rather than the earlier version of Windows. The steps are as follows:

  • Click on “Windows Start menu button”.
  • Right click on “Computer” and go to “Properties”.

  • Click on “Advanced system setting”, a “System Properties” box will appear.

System properties

  • Switch to the “Advanced” tab.
  • Go to the “Start up and Recovery” item and click on “Settings” button.
  • Here you will find “Default operating system”. Choose the one that you need from the dropdown list.
  • You can also change the “Time to display list of operating systems”.
  • Click “OK“.

This procedure is quite handy for those computer users who use multiple operating systems in their computer. Do you know any other technique to change the default operating system for your computer? – Feel free to leave your comment.

Ok, I knew how to do this. But I have a question : I installed and uninstalled Kubuntu. Kubuntu entry is still in the boot list and there’s no option to edit boot list (so I can delete an entry) like in XP…..
    Any suggestion ?

Don’t bother, I’ve found EasyBCD and helped me to delete unwanted entry. But many thanks anyway…..!
P.S. A start-up repair would not be any good to me, as I’ve installed Ubuntu. So I had 3 entries : Windows 7, Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I’ve uninstalled Kubuntu, but Kubuntu entry did not go away.
A start-up repair would flash away Ubuntu entry.

    @Kallol:
    Let me describe.
Windows xp is an earlier version than windows 7. It is impossible to install xp if you have installed windows 7 earlier. You can install but the installation will only be completed if you deactivate the option for windows 7. This might have happened with you. You have silently removed windows 7 when you installed windows xp. In this case you will have use only the later one as OS.
But there is a way to use both the OS XP and Windows 7.
    1. First format all the OS drives.
    2. Then install XP.
    3. Then install Windows 7
It will work definitely as you can always install a newer version of OS after installing the earlier one.
No, it will not heart your computer anyway if you use 2 or more OS.

This trick works when two OS are from Windows.
What if I installed Ubuntu and Windows?
For me now Ubuntu is default OS now I have to change it to Windows.
