Chat apps are everywhere and not that hard to find. What I’d really like to find is an alternative to Talk’s most practical function; notifying me of new email without me having to be signed into gmail in a browser.
That’s all I’m really looking for, just a small program that informs me of new mail the way Talk used to do. Completely independent of what’s going on with my browser. Any suggestions?

Agree, using GTalk only for new e-mail notification. Need to search replacement.

Digsby would be this software. It is excellent and even allows you to send emails directly from the chat window. The development stopped though and a bug causes it to use a lot of CPU. I discovered GMail notifier pro, which also seems to do a good job with the email notifications.
