Asus R510J Review: The Entry-Level Gaming Laptop

Over the past few years, ASUS has offered several efficient laptops across various categories. The company’s Zenbook and ROG series of laptops have been quite popular among business users. Now, the company has come up with a new entry-level gaming laptop, called the Asus R510J. The new laptop is a nice edition to the high-priced gaming category in India. It sports a FHD display and is powered by a 2.66GHz processor along with 8GB RAM, and a Nvidia GTX 950M graphics card. Lets see if the ASUS R510J serves the purpose!

The new laptop sports ASUS’s trademark Mayan pattern on the lid and the insides. Still, the lid is glossy and will easily attracts fingerprints. The ASUS R510J has a thickness of 29mm and is quite heavy at 2.4kg. Inside, the laptop features a matte-finish along with red and black theme for the keys and track-pad. The decently sized track-pad doesn’t get in the way while typing. The keys also have good spacing and are decently sized. However, the keyboard isn’t back-lit, which is surprising. Also, the webcam is also only VGA. The exhaust vents are placed on the left of the laptop, which make it quite warm in that part. Also, the RAM modules can be easily accessed through a provided panel.

The ASUS R510J sports a 15.6-inch LED back-lit display with a full-HD [1080 x 1920 pixels] resolution and anti-glare treatment. The brightness levels are decently high but the viewing angles aren’t the greatest. Also, the lid doesn’t offer much protection as the pixels easily distort if you press the lid. The screen is matte-finished and cuts down well on reflections.

The new ASUS R510J offers a nice combination of a efficient processor, RAM, and GPU. It is powered by a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-4720HQ quad-core processor [goes up to 3.66GHz in Turbo mode] along with a dual-channel 8GB RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M with 3GB DDR3 memory, which also supports Optimus. Users can alternate between the discrete card and the HD 4600 graphics. It comes with 1TB 5400rpm hard disk for storage. The absence of a Solid State Drive [SSD] is a downside though. Other specifications include Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 4-cell 44WHr battery.

The ASUS R510J runs Windows 10 Home 64-bit operating system out-of-the-box. It also offers several utilities including the Live Update, Splendid Utility, and WebStorage apps along with 25GB free Dropbox storage [for a period of six months], pre-installed Windows apps [TripAdvisor, Flipboard, and Gameloft games], and Microsoft Office 365 [Trial version].

The new ASUS R510J runs pretty smoothly and can easily carry out various activities effectively. For an entry-level gaming laptop, it delivers on the various benchmark tests and is gamer-ready. The Multimedia experience is also great. It runs 4K content quite easily and offers pretty decent audio output. However, the gaming experience could have better. While running various needy games such as Far Cry 4, Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, the laptop encountered few difficulties. However, a little older games ran without any problems. A little adjustment in the graphics quality will allow you to play most games smoothly. Overall, the results across the board were great.

While playing games, the heating is a major concern and the new ASUS R510J does heat up constantly, specially the left side. The laptop needed an advanced cooling system architecture complimenting its hardware. Despite not being back-lit, the keyboard works very well as the keys are very well spaced and offer satisfying feedback. The track-pad also offers essential gesture support but is quite a standard Windows affair.

The battery life is also on the lower side. For multimedia usage and internet browsing, it lasted for about three hours. While during gaming, it could only hold on for only 2 hours. However, the laptop charges quite fast.

Despite being an entry-level gaming laptop, the R510J is not cheap at a price of Rs 69,990. However, as far as gaming experience is concerned, it is way above its competition in the price segment. The 8GB RAM and Nvidia GPU give this laptop an extra edge. It gets the job done and is a good entry-level gaming laptop. The ASUS R510J is perfect for you if you want to play new games with decent graphics and are running on a tight budget.

  1. A lot of reviews I see these days don’t really provide anything that I’m interested in, but I’m most definitely interested in this one. I always prefer to play video games in my laptop. This is very nice gaming laptop (ASUS R510J) that you have shared. But i think battery backup is too low. But what do you think Maadhav Saxena?
